Storms rolling through Georgia over the weekend have lingering effects as 9,028 Georgia Power customers remain without power. More than 200,000 Georgia Power customers experienced power outages because of the storm.
The power company reported restoring power to 170,000 customers Sunday. Most of those remaining without power are in the southwestern part of the state, in Troup and Harris Counties near the Alabama state line.
Georgia Power customers aren’t the only ones experiencing outages. City-owned electric companies and electric management corporations (EMCs) also had outages and repair crews getting customers back on the grid.
Diverse Power, which includes Calhoun in its service area, had 3,853 customers without power as of this morning. That is almost 10 percent of their customers. A large number of those were in Coweta County, according to Georgia Power.
People should stay prepared as more winter weather and storms head this way later in the week. That includes knowing what to do if your electricity goes out. Tips include:
Keeping refrigerators and freezers shut.
Disconnect electronics and appliances from electrical outlets to prevent damage from electrical surges.
Have a plan to refrigerate medications or to run medical devices.
Make sure you have working flashlights and candles ready.
Have emergency numbers close by.
