The rezoning and annexation request of 84 acres by Switch breezed through its public hearing and first reading Thursday night at the Cartersville City Council meeting with no objections.
An advocate for Switch, who is building a data center off Bates Road, spoke in favor of it explaining the property owners approached the company about buying the land. It will be a natural buffer except for a building that will be put on the backside of the land. The second reading and vote will be Dec. 4 at a specially scheduled meeting set for 10 a.m.
A data center stores digital information on computer servers. More have popped up because of the demands of artificial intelligence technology.
The council approved the certified election results and several agreements and bid awards including:
A roof replacement for a building on West Cherokee Street. Bartow Roofing got the $16,407 bid.
A new heating and air unit for the J.H. Morgan Gymnasium that cost a total of $30,400 with the city paying $15,200.
Southeast Engineering got the bid to do preliminary engineering work for a sidewalk on Mission road. Cost is $19.130.91.
Southeastern Engineering got the bid for another section of Mission Road sidewalk. It will do preliminary engineering work costing $117,000 with the money coming from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) money.
Provider contracts for three recreational classes where the city gets a portion of the proceeds from class fees.
A list of Cartersville Hall of Fame Inductees for the city’s 175th Anniversary Recognition. Names will be on the city’s website soon. Along with that, the city will spend up to $15,000 on the honors.
